Nursing students complete Memorial’s summer externship

Memorial Health System held a graduation ceremony Friday morning for nurses in its externship program.

12 nursing students from Mississippi receiving recognition for completing the program.

The program allows nursing students to work alongside a veteran nurse in an assigned area, gaining on the job training in the process.

“Student nursing is our future and so I have always embraced students and wanted them to have the experiences and the clinical time that they need to gain confidence and be able to be the best possible nurse that they can be,” according to Memorial Health System Chief Nursing Officer Mary Brobst.

“Over the summer, I had my preceptor there with me the whole time. I got to do things I’ve never tried before and a person like a catheter and an IV like I never got to do those on hospital patients and I got more confident with myself. Thanks to my preceptor because my preceptor Sam and Lauren just very much encouraged me,” Nursing Extern Grace Rose says.
