NCAA Baseball: No. 22 USM sweeps FAU with extra innings walk-off

This season, the Southern Miss baseball team has won 21 games at home. After this weekend, six of those wins have now come via the walk-off as the legend of Pete Taylor Park Magic continues to grow.
Dating back to late April of the 2015 season, the Golden Eagles have a record of 58-12 in games played in Hattiesburg. This weekend might have been USM’s finest work yet, securing Saturday and Sunday wins in the bottom of the ninth or later.
The latter was an 11th inning two RBI single off the bat of Dylan Burdeaux, giving the Black and Gold the sweep over Florida Atlantic, as well as a three game strangle hold in Conference USA.
Their overall mark of 37-12 matches the school record set by the 2011 squad for the best start through 49 games. Yet that’s still not the only team this year’s bunch feels like it’s being overshadowed by. Southern Miss third baseman Taylor Braley said, “I mean it’s really something special. Kirk was just talking about it. He said all we ever hear about is the 2009 team, how good they were, but we’re just like if you don’t believe it now, I mean just think about the 2017 team for the rest of the year. I mean if you can’t believe it after what we did the past two days, then I mean it’s going to be tough.”
If the season ended today, USM would draw a first round game versus Rice in the CUSA tournament at MGM Park in Biloxi.
It’s also worth noting Friday night starter Colt Smith has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for throwing seven innings of shutout ball in his first start of the season.
