Mass community college choir to perform at MGCCC’S IMPAC

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is hosting the Mississippi Community College Choir Festival this week.

Community college choirs from across Mississippi have joined together to bring music to the public. News 25 had an inside look at rehearsals for this mass choir performance.

Nearly 350 students from seven different institutions will form two mass choirs led by Dr. Deborah Chandler and Beth Everett.

Festivals like this challenge young musicians to learn new music quickly alongside people they have never met.

This also provides them with the opportunity to meet different directors and learn from them.

“When we come to different conferences and everything, we’re exposed to different choirs, different techniques that they may have that we kind of consume and use on our own,” said one student from Coahoma Community College.

Most importantly, music brings people together.

“It brings about such a sense of community and unity, ” said Kate Sawyer, Choral Director at MGCCC’s Jackson county campus. “And we want to just make sure that our vocal musicians from across the state in their community college programs, that they feel like they have camaraderie and that they can come together and share their artistry.”

The mass choir will perform Friday morning at 10:30 at the IMPAC on MGCCC’s Harrison County campus.
