WXXV Stories From 2023: May through August

WXXV wants to highlight a few stories from May through August of this year.

MAY 16, 2023 – Ocean Springs shooting suspect extradited

Starting off with May, the shooting at the Scratch Kitchen happened on May 5th.

One 19-year-old was killed and 5 others were injured.

The suspect in the shooting was extradited from Mobile back to Jackson County.

The Scratch Kitchen was closed soon after.

JUNE 20, 2023 – More than 100 homes, businesses damaged in Moss Point tornado

In June, a tornado ripped through Moss Point near Main Street.

The community came together to rebuild after the storm, with many organizations coming together to provide relief for the citizens of the city.

The effects were felt months later too.

FEMA and MEMA opened a mobile recovery center in Moss Point as late as September.

JULY 11, 2023 – First Safe Haven Baby Box in Mississippi arrives in Long Beach

In July, the city of Long Beach had the first Safe Haven Baby Box in the state installed.

The baby box is installed on the side of the Long Beach Fire Department.

How it works is someone can open up the door and place a baby inside.

When that baby is inside, EMS and 911 will be alerted so the baby can be taken to the hospital for a checkup.

AUGUST 21, 2023 – Burn ban still in effect for South Mississippi

Rounding out the list is August – Hancock County was hit by wildfires amid a burn ban.

Buccaneer State Park had to be closed after a marsh fire burned part of the area.

The nature trail was the most affected, with a gazebo being destroyed.

No other structures were damaged in this fire.

A grass fire also caused traffic to shut down in both directions a few days later on I-10 near Mile Marker 8.

The cause was multiple brush fires that jumped the interstate.
