Biloxi State of the City
Baseball, BP and road work are all among the major accomplishments and updates Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich hoped to drive home at today’s State of the City address. About 700 people were on hand for today’s address.
The annual State of the City address was a first for Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich, who is serving his ninth month as the city’s top politician. “I’m so thrilled to be here as mayor and in my words couldn’t describe what I’m feeling.”
Today’s turnout of 700 people marks one of the biggest turnouts to date. “Mayor Gilich, he definitely had the heart and soul during his speech today. It had us all in awe on his humble approach of being the mayor of Biloxi and how much he cares about us as the citizens of Biloxi,” said Biloxi Chamber of Commerce executive director Tina Ross-Seamans.
The biggest point Mayor Gilich wanted to drive home in his address was the state of the roads in east Biloxi. The work north of the CSX railway is a three year contract. With 19 months left, the mayor says the city is doing everything they can to keep the roads passable and the project steering straight ahead. Once the work north of the tracks wraps up, construction will begin on the south side. “We’re not going to see a contractor come in and tear up 55 miles of streets. It’s going to be controlled. It’s going to be supervised and it’s going to be orderly.”
The mayor pointed to major milestones, including the early completion of MGM Park. He also pointed out that the city is asking $100 million up for grabs from the BP money in the state’s general fund as well as a much bigger portion of tidelands funds, all part of high hopes the mayor has on the horizon. “And for Biloxi, it’s going to be a bright, bright, sunny day,” said Mayor Gilich.
