Louisiana man killed in single-car accident on I-10

A Lafitte, Louisiana, man died Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 10 near Long Beach.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said 72-year-old Ted Weaver died of blunt force trauma. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Switzer said law enforcement got a 911 call about 10 a.m. Wednesday that a vehicle eastbound on I-10 was driving erratically. While on the phone with 911, the caller said the car crashed.

The vehicle left the roadway at the exit ramp at County Farm Road, hit the guard rail just before the overpass and went airborne, landing nose-down just off the roadway of the southbound lane of County Farm Road south of the interstate.

Switzer said he believes Weaver had a medical issue that led to the crash. Toxicology tests will be run as part of the investigation being handled by Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Two small terriers were in the vehicle with Weaver. One died at the scene. The other was taken by Animal Control to an emergency vet for treatment.

Family members told Switzer Weaver had had a medical appointment in New Orleans earlier in the day, then was driving to Alabama for a visit when the accident occurred.
