Moss Point Mayoral Forum

Tonight Moss Point residents had the chance to get better acquainted with ten of the 11 qualified candidates running for mayor. News 25’s Kendra Turley takes us inside tonight’s public forum at Magnolia Middle School to hear what qualities residents are looking for in the next mayor of the River City.
Time is winding down until hundreds of people head to the polls and cast their vote for the next mayor of Moss Point. President of Theta Zeta Omega chapter of AKA Ja’Leasa Walden said, “So the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and the Moss Point Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta decided to put this forum together so we could give the community residents of Moss Point an opportunity to voice their concerns and ask their questions to all eleven of the mayoral candidates.”
Candidates had the opportunity to mingle with residents during a meet-and-greet before the forum at Magnolia Middle School. Moss Point resident Clement Malone said, “What I want to know is not just do you want to come in because you think you’re the perfect fit, but I want to know what is your plan to correct the issues that we have here.”
Current Mayor Billy Broomfield was the only candidate not in attendance. The diverse group of candidates vying for his seat took turns explaining their goals and proposed changes for the city. Moss Point resident Charlotte Brown said, “A lot of our leaders are kind of over the age of 70 and we need somebody that’s going to be energetic, that’s going to be in the digital age, that’s ready for change.”
“I’m looking for someone who has an economic plan to develop the community. We need some economic growth to bring jobs, to bring industries, to bring people back to the city,” said Malone.
Members of both sororities hope that residents were able to narrow down their choices or even make a decision on who they want to be the next leader of the River City. President of the Moss Point Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Debora Joiner said, “I hope they have a clear understanding of what the process is and what the candidates have to offer and just be informed to know that they have a voice.”
