Buc-ee’s breaks ground on new Mississippi location

Buc-ee’s representatives broke ground today alongside Mississippi legislators.

In roughly 16 months, Mississippi’s first Buc-ee’s will be where this dirt patch off Menge and I-10 is now. With it, nearly 200 jobs at $18 an hour and massive tourism.

We talked to the original Beaver himself about what Buc-ee’s is bringing to Harrison County. Buc-ee’s President Beaver Alpin said, “So, we try to come in and be a good corporate neighborhood of the community, a great employer, and provide opportunities for the community that may not be here.”

All full-time workers also receive 401K, health insurance, and three weeks paid-time off. At the ground-breaking, Beaver talked about running around his family’s convenience store as a child.

Buc-ee the Beaver was born at a much later date, but with fond memories in mind. “Beaver was my nickname my mom gave me very early on. So, that’s where Buc-ee Beaver came from, my nickname.”

Now, Aplin aims to create a store that people want to work at. That kind of attitude is exactly why the state of Mississippi decided to take the leap of faith. Representative Richard Bennett said, “There’s a lot of other business that’s going to come in. There are businesses that follow Buc-ee’s, and Buc-ee’s is recruiting the people that they want around them. We’re so excited about this. I think you’re going to see an economic boom on this part of the county that’s unprecedented.”

Buc-ee’s will begin the hiring process about three months before opening day.
