Former Saints Player Speaks at Pass Christian Elementary
Breakfast is the meal of champions. This morning at Pass Christian Elementary, former Saints superstar and Super Bowl champion Deuce McAllister passed along his health and fitness tips to the kids.
News 25’s Laurene Callander caught up with the Mississippi native to discuss the importance of healthy habits.
McAllister spent his football career rushing through a crowd of players. Now, he is passing health and fitness tips to kids across the nation as an MVP in the Southeast Dairy Association and in his role with the NFL’s Fuel Up to Play 60. “When I was growing up, we didn’t have this so it’s been an initiative by not only the USDA but the dairy farmers and the National Football League to get kids moving,” said McAllister.
Cathi Deveer with the Southeast Dairy Association said, “Studies show that children who eat breakfast do a lot better academically, behaviorally do a lot better, tardiness and absenteeism goes down when children eat breakfast. We know that schools provide a healthy and well-rounded nutritious breakfast, so we’re trying to increase participation across the state.”
The standard breakfast meal students at Pass Christian Elementary expect to see every morning includes something hot, like a sausage sandwich, fruit, juice and milk.
“This is their program. They can design it and be interactive as much as they want. So, for me, I’m just a quote unquote caveat for it because they own it, they control it and they’ve had improvement,” said McAllister.
Just like his days on the gridiron, the crowd at Pass Christian Elementary cheered for McAllister. The kids also walked away with autographs and pictures with the NFL great. McAllister hopes his visit inspires these youngsters to stick with the playbook, to continue to eat healthy and stay fit throughout the game of life.
