First Case of Enterovirus Confirmed in Mississippi

Enterovirus, the respiratory illness that’s been sweeping the nation, has made its way to Mississippi.

The Mississippi State Department of Health confirms the first case was a Hancock County child who was hospitalized and has since recovered. Symptoms of Enterovirus are very similar to the common cold and include fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, and basic body aches. Most cases of the illness are likely mild.

Paul Byers, an epidemiologist, says, “If you or your child are ill, we want you to stay home from work or school to prevent that spread, but there are some other important things individuals can do to prevent infections like this particular Enterovirus. That’s washing your hands frequently with soap and water, avoid kissing and hugging and sharing utensils with individuals who are ill. Certainly cover coughs and sneezes, especially if you’re ill.”

Enteroviruses are very common, causing 10 to 15 million infections in the United States each year.
