Harrison County School District nurses prepare for new school year
Harrison County School District nurses gathered for professional development training in preparation for the school year.
Various school nurses in Harrison County went through training and seminars on how best to nurse students back to health when they aren’t feeling so well.
The nurses were refreshed on medication and policy updates for the 2023-2024 academic school year.
They also learned how to combat drug use, especially vaping in the school system.
MS Bureau of Narcotics Director Steven Maxwell shared with nurses how to assist with a potential overdose and recognize students vaping. “There’s going to be a change in their pupils. There’s going to be a change in their interest associated with, you know, different types of smells, flavors, colors, and anything that is outside of how that child has typically, normally behaved in a classroom setting, could be an indicator. That something is going on and that they are potentially vaping.”
Harrison County students return to school Friday, August 4th.
A study released in 2022 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 2.55 million U.S. middle and high school students reported current e-cigarette use in 2022, which includes 14.1 percent of high school students and 3.3 percent of middle school students.
