Warmer Weather Brings Early Crawfish
The red tide may be affecting the fish in the Gulf Coast waters but the warmer temperatures are doing wonders for crawfish season. News 25’s Laurene Callander caught up with a local seafood restaurant to get their reaction on the early opening.
The warmer weather has brought in red tide algae bloom on the Coast and because of it thousands of dead fish have washed up on the shore. The higher temperatures are doing wonders for crawfish season, which opened up early this year. Owner of Captain Hook’s Seafood Hung Le said, “I believe they are caught in ponds and rivers, so it doesn’t affect the crawfish at all.”
Captain Hook’s Seafood Restaurant in Gulfport specializes in seafood platters and crawfish dishes. Le credits the warmer weather for the abundance of high quality crawfish. “The crawfish has been really good this season, especially for the beginning of the season. They’ve been pretty big versus all the other years when it’s colder and they’re really smaller. It’s been a pretty good beginning of the season.”
Captain Hook’s Seafood is extremely happy that crawfish season opens up this year especially because they have an award winning recipe to show off. Carolyn Jones, a fry cook at Captain Hook’s Seafood, said, “If you come in our store, you’ll see we’ve got about 3 or 4 huge trophies. Our recipe is quite different from some of the other seasoning flavoring you might get at some of the other restaurants. So, just come in and try them.”
Crawfish season typically opens mid-December but this warm winter gave the season a head start around Thanksgiving, something Captain Hook’s Seafood restaurant is not complaining about.
Le hopes the warmer weather continues and the success of the large crawfish keeps coming in.
