Agencies asking for long-term relief committee

Two weeks after an EF-2 tornado hit Moss Point, area agencies are asking for a long-term relief committee to help with the recovery.

Jackson County is the only coastal county without an active relief committee.

The long-term relief is funded by MEMA with a sum of up to $250,000 in the face of disaster for affected areas.

The committee was last active after Hurricane Katrina with its role being to decide how to distribute resources for the rebuilding of communities.

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors has yet to approve the relief, with no timetable on when it will go into effect.

Moss Point Mayor Billy Knight said the county needs to be prepared in the wake of another natural disaster.

“A committee that will be in place that MEMA will help put money into the pot $250,000 to help people with their materials,” Mayor Knight said. “It’s only for buying material to help them repair their home and to get them stable again. This committee is good for the whole county, not just for Moss Point, but for the whole county.”

The supervisors will meet next Monday to discuss the next steps toward putting the long-term relief committee into effect.
