Rebels Head to Sugar Bowl
For the first time in 45 years, the Ole Miss Rebels will be looking for a sweet end to their season. The Rebels will be taking on the Oklahoma State Cowboys at the Superdome for the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
The game kicks off tomorrow night at 7:30. Today, News 25’s Bryan Kennedy traveled to New Orleans to hear from head coach Hugh Freeze on what it will take to get their tenth win of the season.
The New Orleans Superdome has been overrun with Ole Miss crimson and navy all week as the team prepared for tomorrow night’s Sugar Bowl, a sign the team’s head coach says shows they’ve nearly reached the top. “It was bred in my mind that taking Ole Miss to the Sugar Bowl was about as good as it can get,” said Freeze, “The Sugar Bowl, in many Rebel’s minds, including mine, is one of the pinnacles of coaching in the Southeastern Conference.”
Freeze and his Rebels will be taking on the 10-2 Oklahoma State Cowboys tomorrow night but the road to the Superdome wasn’t one without adversity. The Rebels dropped three hard fought games and last week, they lost their All-American defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche to suspension. Still, Freeze credits his team with meeting that adversity head on. “To finish the season winning the Magnolia Bowl, the Egg Bowl and now playing in the Sugar Bowl, just speaks to that mental toughness and resolve that our team showed.”
Will that mental toughness lead to Freeze and his Rebels taking the trophy home tomorrow night? Coach Freeze says if they don’t and they do lose, it won’t be because they didn’t have enough time to stop Oklahoma State’s two quarterback system. “We’ve been able to get 14 practices in and if you just have three practices, like a given week, for two different type deals, it makes it much more difficult. Having the extra time you really, that shouldn’t be an excuse after the game if we get beat.”
Win or lose, Freeze credits his players for now making Ole Miss a national contender, sending a message to future Rebels. “I will forever be indebted to the Robert Nkemdiches, Laquon Treadwells and Laremy Tunsils. If enough of you quality individuals and players come together to Ole Miss, I think we can do pretty special things.”
