Firework safety for Coastal birds

As the 4th of July holiday approaches, Audubon Delta is urging everyone to prioritize the well-being of our feathered friends during the celebrations.

The festivities, marked by fireworks, barbecues, and beach gatherings, can be a threat to local beach-nesting birds, like Least Terns, who lay their eggs directly on the sand to rely on survival of their offspring.

But loud noises associated with the 4th of July fireworks celebrations can have harmful consequences for them.

Audubon stewards will be on the beaches this weekend to help protect vulnerable birds nesting.

Audubon Stewardship Manager Melinda Averhart advises everyone to be aware of these things. “If you see neon rope and some wooden stakes and some signs talking about beach nesting birds that means that there are sensitive nesting species in that area. The best thing you could do is just to give the bird some space right. Super simple, if you see them reacting to you or coming flying in your direction then you’re definitely too close.”
