Fog Rolls in on the Coast

To some, it’s a big white wall and for others, a cloudy haze. One thing we know, the fog is here to stay on the Coast for the next few mornings. News 25’s Kristen Durand ventured out into this morning’s foggy conditions and has this report.
Driving through thick fog is a breeze for retired airline pilot Skip Borders. “It’s just a natural phenomenon but this fog here is really nothing and I don’t have to fly in it so that makes it real nice.”
For others, it can be a stressful experience when you can barely see out of your windshield. While Monday morning’s fog had mostly cleared out by midday, Coast residents can expect this dreary haze over the next few mornings. WXXV Meteorologist Steve Taylor said, “This time of year is when we do get the densest fog and it hangs on for hours in the mornings and it certainly snarls traffic in the evenings as well.”
This type of fog also leads to accidents but if you slow down, use your low beams and leave plenty of space between other vehicles, your chance of having a wreck dwindles. Corporal Benjamin Seibert with Highway Patrol said, “People get in the fog and they don’t expect something in the road, all it takes is one thing in the road and they’re in a car crash.”
Experts say keep your eye on the road but also on your speedometer because thick fog can mask the sensation of speeding by removing those visual indicators and never stop in the middle of the road, no matter what. “We work a lot of wrecks where people get into small fender benders and they want to get out and look at the damage in the middle of the interstate and then we have another bad wreck come in after that. We also have people that have flat tires or break down and don’t get the car all the way off the road and that can be a fatal combination,” said Seibert.
As for Skip Borders, he’s found a way to have sunshine on a foggy day. “With the Christmas holiday coming up, everybody’s kind of looking for snow or maybe some kind of an inclement weather type thing. It gives you a little bit more of a Christmas feeling for me.”
