Cooling stations set up in Moss Point

It’s been a little over a week since an EF2 tornado hit Moss Point and with the severe heat gripping the south, it’s making cleanup a little more difficult.

The first station of many cooling stations will be opening its doors tomorrow in Moss Point at Secondary Missionary Baptist Church.

Volunteers as well as residents in need will have access to the church from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The River City is currently under an excessive heat warning, with the heat index expected to reach as high as 110 degrees.

For Moss Point, it’s another way of saying thank you to those lending a helping hand. Pastor Johnnie Sims said, “People are beginning to come into this area to work. So, we felt that we needed stations where they can come and refresh, charge their phones up, and whatever they need to do before they go back into the heat.”

Mayor Billy Knight said, “We want to make it as comfortable and convenient for them as we can. So, I just hate we haven’t done it before now, but you know, it just takes time to work all these things out. I want the public to know, all the volunteers to know, that we are really working on these things because we thank them for all of their service, all the support. We’re going to make it convenient as much as we can.”

Mayor Knight says another cooling station is coming soon at First Baptist Church on Main Street.
