USM in Conference USA Title Game
The University of Southern Mississippi is just days away from playing for the title of Conference USA champions. News 25’s Kendra Turley caught up with USM players and students to hear how the campus is preparing for Saturday’s big match up against Western Kentucky.
After going 4-32 over the last three seasons, the University of Southern Mississippi’s football program is back on top. USM wide receiver Mike Thomas said, “On a mental standpoint, we all have one goal and the physical standpoint, we work so hard in the summer time and the spring time and I feel like both is mixing very well and it’s got us here so far right now.”
The Golden Eagles walked away with a 58-24 victory against Louisiana Tech last Saturday, securing a chance to compete against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers for the Conference USA Championship title.
The Golden Eagles have won six straight games, giving them a 9-3 record going into the championship game, a complete 180 from last year’s 3-9 record. USM junior Jordan Tripp said, “As soon as I came here my freshmen year, I heard they were really good and I came to games and supported them and they kind of let me down but now they’re really bringing me back up.” USM Senior Rachael Battles said, “It’s a complete turnaround from how it’s been the last couple of years. Everyone is just excited and we’re wishing the team the best of luck.”
USM players tell News 25 this year’s success stems from the team’s ability to focus on one game at a time. USM quarterback Nick Mullens said, “I’ve always said ‘control the moment, don’t let the moment control me.’ So I think if our teams stays calm and plays our game and focuses on us then we’ll have success.”
As USM students prepare for final exams, many find it hard to focus with such a big game just around the corner. USM freshmen Royce Davidson said, “Man, I’m so excited. The football team has been doing good. They’ve been executing this year. They have everyone around campus all hyped and I’m happy.”
The Golden Eagles will take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday at 11 a.m.
