Moss Point community prepares to rebuild after tornado
Three hundred homes and eighty businesses were damaged in the tornado that ripped through Moss Point earlier this week.
Now, they’re preparing to repair damages.
A tornado left a trail of destruction on Monday in Moss Point. There are buildings down and trees down, but according to Mayor Billy Knight, the city is optimistic. “Right now, we’re getting a lot of support from our community. People helping people. That’s what it is all about. Lot of help from all over the state, people calling us from everywhere, wanting to know what they can do to help. We’re going to bounce back because of that kind of support.”
Moss Point is still in the early stages of repairing damage, but the city is already experiencing an outpouring of support across the Gulf Coast.
A temporary shelter has been set up in Moss Point with the help of the Red Cross. Those impacted by the tornado can go to the Riverfront Community Center for mental health resources, food, and water.
The Red Cross is assessing the storm damage and preparing to begin clean up efforts.
Red Cross Volunteer Linda Goforth says the organization will begin clean up tomorrow following supply arrival. “We are in the process of beginning the cleanup phase. Here on the Coast, we’re familiar with the needs and the storms and the tornados and the hurricanes and all. But we don’t have the facilities to keep things on hand. So, we have to order them from warehouses. So, we order them out of the warehouses as we get them. And we have ordered. Tomorrow we are going to get shovels, rakes, gloves, and more tarps.”
