Moss Point to Build Public Safety Center

Ten years ago, Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on the Moss Point Police Department. Since then, the building has been standing but not without a laundry list of problems. This month, that list will be erased when the city breaks ground on the new Moss Point Public Safety Center. News 25’s Bryan Kennedy gives us a look at what the new center means for the city.
Leaky roofs, little space for operations and a dispatch that’s living in the past, the current Moss Point Police Department has its problems. The new Moss Point Public Safety Center will solve them all without costing you a dime. Moss Point Mayor Billy Broomfield said, “The plus for us is all the things we are doing here, we have not raised anybody’s taxes in order to accomplish what you see happening in this city.”
The newest development for the city will be a $4.5 million public safety center. The two-story center, paid for mostly by FEMA and MEMA grants, will be located on Bellview Avenue by the fire station. Moss Point Police Chief Art McClung tells News 25 it not only means big things for the Coast but for the state. “We’ll have a training room where we didn’t have one. Now we can do training, not just for Moss Point but we can host training for all over the state. A larger courtroom, if you look outside the courtroom today the line is wrapped around the building. The courtroom will be much larger so we can accommodate the people that come.”
Mayor Broomfield said, “That was one of the promises that I made when I started to campaign, that we would get a new public safety building. And God has been good to us so now we’re going to deliver on that promise.”
For the police chief, those first moments in the center will be a time to celebrate. “I may jump up and do a kick, after I thank the Lord for what he’s done for us,” said McClung.
