4-H Awards Banquet

Dozens of students say they have a lot to be grateful for tonight. They’re members of the Harrison County 4-H Club and they say the program has turned their lives around. Many were honored tonight at the organization’s annual banquet.
What a difference a year can make. Just eight months ago, Genesis Searles would never have imagined he’d be here. “I was like getting into trouble and stuff. It kinda took me from off the streets and just game me something more creative to do.”
Now, he is one of two hosts for this year’s 4-H awards banquet, honoring fellow students who have worked hard to make a difference in their community. Skylar Baldwin, mistress of ceremonies, said, “Interact with so many different people from all over the state. I get to learn things because someone may have a different way of doing something than I do and it’s great to realize for yourself that ‘hey, I’m not always right.’”
The Harrison County 4-H Club empowers youth to use the four H’s, heads, hearts, hands and health, to make their community a better place. This year’s theme was “painting a brighter future for students of the Gulf Coast.” Dozens of students, supported by their loved ones, gathered at the banquet to celebrate what they have accomplished this year. “This is the event, one day out of the year that we can all kind of get together. I get to see people I haven’t seen in a while. That’s really great,” said 4-H Counsel President Bryce Moore.
This year, they have a lot to be proud of. They have cleaned beaches, learned to respect the law and got a lesson on manners. The diverse group of students bonded through working together with a common goal. “I pledge my head for clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service and my health for better living for my club, my community, my country and my world,” said Baldwin.
Awards were given out for each program the club has but students know the real reward is in learning to better themselves and the world in which they live. “We want to go out and we want to make the world different and each of us here, we truly believe that we can,” said Baldwin.
4-H is a free program that elementary through high school students can join. For more information, you can visit their offices in downtown Gulfport on 17th Street.
