Coast Execs Play in Slot Tournament to Support Heart Walk
John Hairston, the Chairman of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, is involved in many things along the Coast, from gaming to banking. This year, Hairston has made the commitment to head the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and to lose 50 pounds. Hairston says, "I’ll do the diet until I plane out, then we’re gonna’ add levels of exercise until I find what’s that way I have to live the rest of my life, in order to be healthy and to walk my girls down the aisle and play with my grand babies, so that’s the purpose of the exercise."
To help Hairston gain support for the Heart Walk, Treasure Bay Casino C.E.O., Susan Varnes, offered to host a casino operators’ slot machine tournament. Varnes says, "Operators are so good with their time and their money and investments, and I thought this would be a good way to show their commitment to the community."
Eight casino executives, including Varnes, played in the tournament, but in the end, Anthony Delvescovo, Vice President of the Beau Rivage, came out on top. Delvescovo says, "This is actually my first slot tournament ever and I didn’t know how I was doing the entire time, but I was having fun. I can understand why folks love playing the slots. I tell ya’, watching those reels spin, it was great.”
All together the American Heart Association raised $9,000 on Wednesday. With a helping hand from these casino executives, the Heart Walk will take place at Jones Park on September 27th at 9:00 a.m. To sign up to be a part of the Heart Walk, you can visit www.gulfcoastheartwalk.org.
