Biloxi Shuckers lead off eighth season on Friday

Weather permitting, the Biloxi Shuckers are less than 24 hours away from leading off their eighth season as the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

All things considered, so far, so good, at least based on player development. Albeit very early in the season, the big-league club is in first place in the NL Central with a record of 5-1.

The Brew Crew has scored 38 runs in its last 36 innings, 13 of those being produced by former Shuckers Garrett Mitchell, Joey Wiemer, and Brice Turang.

Of course, Milwaukee has more talent on the way, currently rostering seven of its top 30 prospects in Biloxi, including the soon-to-be number one overall prospect in baseball, Jackson Chourio. Shuckers Manager Mike Guerrero said, “Almost all the starters in our big-league roster has been part of the Shuckers, and a lot of the relievers and now you’re starting to see in the lineup a lot of the position players going through the minor league system is pride for the Brewers that we’ve accomplished as an organization, as a player development group, that’s what we’re all about is getting those guys out there and contributing to the Major League team to get some W’s.”

The Shuckers and M-Braves get things rolling at 6:35 p.m. tomorrow.
