Biloxi Holds Meeting to Bust Myths About Common Core
The meeting was held at the Beatrice Brown Community Center in downtown Biloxi and dozens of parents were in attendance. Speakers included former teachers, Housing Authority members, and Biloxi school district administrators. Speakers answered questions and helped put to rest many of the misconceptions that parents have about the new curriculum.
Kenyatta Thompson, Director of Community Outreach for the B.H.A., says, "I think that a lot of people think that the Common Core curriculum is going to set their kids back. Well, I think in actuality it is going to move them forward."
Karen Norwood, Assistant Superintendent for the Biloxi School District, says, "People don’t really have a good understanding of what Common Core really is. It’s simply a national curriculum that will put Mississippi children learning at the same pace, the same time, the same standards nationwide."
All schools are now required to use Common Core.
