Harrison County Reopens Cold Case
Eighteen years has passed since one young Pass Christian man was murdered in cold blood. Now, Harrison County investigators are reopening the cold case and they need your help to solve it.
It was a February night in 1997 when a DuPont security guard found Wesley Cuevas slumped over in his own car just off of Kiln Delisle. Harrison County Investigator Caleb Mitchell said, “He was found in his vehicle with two gunshot wounds to the head.”
Cuevas was only 19 years old. He had a job and was taking college classes. His whole life ahead of him was taken away in seconds. Investigators followed leads but they all turned up to be dead ends. Now, 18 years later, investigators are taking a second look at the cold case. “We’ve been interviewing several people from back then and are following up on other leads of the case. We’ve been able to submit evidence that previously wasn’t able to be submitted to the crime lab and to a DNA lab,” said Mitchell.
According to Mitchell, that evidence comes from the inside of Wesley’s 1992 Chevy Cavalier and the crime scene. Today DNA technology can better read that evidence to hopefully put a close to the case. Investigator Kristi Johnson said, “DNA testing is in progress right now. We are waiting for those results and we’re hoping that some of those results will lead us in one direction or another as far as finding out who killed Wesley.”
Finding out who killed Wesley Cuevas is a task both Johnson and Mitchell hope to achieve, if not for him, then for a family left without a son. “I have spoken with Wesley’s mother on this. She is very happy this case has been reopened,” said Mitchell.
