Fast food employee shoots customer after argument starts over intercom

Gulfport Police have made an arrest in the shooting that happened Thursday night near Middle Drive and Highway 49.

Police arrested 33-year-old Eddie Louis Smith on a charge of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon after a felony conviction. Bond is set at $300,000.

Police say officers were helping a stranded motorist in the area about 8 p.m. when they were flagged down about an fight around the corner. As officers approached, they heard two gunshots and saw Smith on top of the victim.

Detectives learned Smith and the victim got into a fight via the intercom speaker at the Burger King drive-thru. Smith, an employee, left the business through a back door wearing a cross-body fanny pack and the victim got out of his vehicle, when the fight began.

Then Smith retrieved a gun from the fanny pack and fired two shots. One of the bullets hit the victim and the other hit Smith’s hand while the two were struggling for the gun.

Both men were taken to a hospital for treatment. The victim is listed as stable.

After being treated for his wound, Smith was taken to taken to Gulfport Police Department, where it was discovered he is a convicted felon. He was then taken to Harrison County jail.
