Cruisin’ the Coast: Whiskey City Cruisers

We all know car owners come from near and far to participate in Cruisin’ the Coast, but what about the people who just come to watch? News 25’s Katarina Luketich shows us what keeps our visitors coming back year after year.
It’s not hard to find the Whiskey City Cruisers this year of year. For the past 13 years, they’ve parked right across from Sharkheads in Biloxi. This year, the Kentucky group rolled in a newbie, Mike Wathen. “The guys have been telling me about this place for a long time. They said you’ll go down there, you’ll enjoy yourself,” said Wathen.
Wathen and the crew hit their spot early, enjoying the view and waving at the antique cars passing by. While it may look like they’re just watching traffic, vintage car lovers understand it’s all about the thrill of seeing so many classics fill the streets. “Every few cars is an old car, about every third of fourth one. We just love doing it, I reckon,” said Ronnie Hibbs.
For many, Cruisin’ is more than just a car show, it’s a vacation. They tell News 25 what better way to spend it than doing what they love on the beautiful Gulf Coast. “There’s just so much going on down here and good places to eat, good places to visit. It’s right there on the beach, you just can’t beat this. How can anybody be disappointed to come down here,” said Wathen.
Another draw is the camaraderie, spending a week with thousands of people who love the same thing they do and even making some friends down the road. “We get to do this every year with each other. It’s fun to see the tents pop up and you get to looking to see the same people again,” said Gary Simmons.
Simply said, it is tradition, a tradition the Whiskey City Cruisers and others like them enjoy, share and pass on, they look forward to each year, as others hop on board with them.
