Cruisin’ the Coast Registration

Hot rods flooded the streets of Highway 90 for the first official day of registration for Cruisin’ the Coast. News 25’s Laurene Callander shows us why organizers believe this will be a record breaking year.
The first official day to register your classic cars for Cruisin’ the Coast rolled in and the lines were full of hot rod lovers from across the country. Jay Johnson, from San Antonio, Texas, said, “We came in last night. It took us ten hours to drive down here, trailered the cars down, came here this morning and stood in line for about 35 minutes. We got our souvenirs, so we’ll all set to go.”
Many of the registered antiques have been restored, painted, or designed from scratch from die-hard car fanatics. Some say you don’t have to be a car show regular to enjoy Cruisin’ the Coast. Tammy Carter, from Melbourne, Florida, said, “You don’t have to like antiques to appreciate the time and effort that people put into their cars because they really do, it’s not just the money. It’s a labor of love.”
Cruisin’ the Coast continues to grow each year, but what is it exactly that brings these car lovers back to the Coast? Many say it’s the people. “There was a gentleman in line this morning that’s from this area, gave us a lot of information about the cruise, about how it’s gonna work, and things like that,” said Carter.
Registration Director Lisa Burnett said, “We’ve had some people come back and talk to us later and say ‘we loved it here so much that we moved, we built a home, we bought a home, bought a condo.’ So, I think it’s the people.”
A total of 6,388 cars were registered in 43 out of 50 states, plus two from out of the county. Cruisin’ the Coast officials say they are looking at record breaking numbers for the year.
If you weren’t able to make it out to Centennial Plaza in Gulfport to register your car, booths will be open every day for the rest of the week from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
