Katrina Brings Nurse and Patient Together
Hurricane Katrina brought major devastation to the Coast, but in the relationship between a Fresenius Medical Care, Orange Grove Clinic assistant and her dialysis patient, it only brought them closer.
Miss Kathy and her patient Peggy already had a special bond before the storm, knowing each other for years at a previous clinic in Gulfport. When the 2005 disaster hit, Orange Grove was the only clinic open between Mobile and New Orleans, which caused an overflow of patients who needed their dialysis treatment.
Miss Kathy was working night and day to help the patients at the clinic, but felt the need to call Peggy and see if she was okay. “I can say no matter what, my family is there but with her, you know, it’s somewhat of an estranged. I got her, I got her. I’m that family always.”
Peggy Johnson, patient at the Fresenius Medical Care, Orange Grove Clinic, said, “I need her on my team to survive. Sometimes, I have sad days but she just takes them away from me so quick. You know what I’m talking about. I love that and she’s the only one I got in my life now that is doing that for me.”
The two ladies tell News 25 the close family bond they have with one another will last a lifetime.
