No Gunshots at Camp Shelby
One man is in custody following what soldiers at Camp Shelby thought were gunshots fired in the vicinity of their training camp.
Sixty one year old Alfred Baria is now in custody after law enforcement found him in a red pickup truck on Highway 49, just south of New Augusta in Perry County. As it turns out, what they heard were not gunshots. Baria admitted to law enforcement that he can make his truck backfire on command, which is what is believed to have made the gunfire-like sounds. No weapons were found in the vehicle. A search of Baria’s home turned up two guns. Baria is charged with two felonies of possession of weapon by a convicted felon and four misdemeanors.
Colonel Greg Michel, Camp Shelby installation commander, said, “We cannot control the actions of others. What we can do is control the way our soldiers react to it and actually the meat of the exercise actually came to a halt today. We had no soldiers that were injured as a result of this and they were able to complete their training as scheduled.”
Due to recent events in Chattanooga, Camp Shelby was already under heightened security. They say they will continue to maintain that increased force protection. The Perry County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate today’s events.
