Volunteers prepare treasure boxes for Grandparents Day
Northwood Church members and volunteers are preparing for Grandparents Day as we reach the big date.
September 10th is Adopt a Grandparent Day; a day Kathy Rogers takes seriously as the co-founder of Adopt a Grandparent Day. Rogers and volunteers buy 66-quart containers to use as treasure boxes then fills them up with items that are commonly used or are in high demand in nursing homes.
Each treasure box is personally designed by a volunteer or child.
Rogers came up with this idea when COVID-19 started, when in-person visits were prohibited.
This is the first-year volunteers will be able to give the treasure boxes in-person and have one-on-one interaction with residents since the start of the pandemic. “My mother came to live with me after a stroke. I had a baby monitor that went into her room to my room. I heard her get up in the middle of the night and I heard her fall. When she fell, she broke some bones in her hands and she ended up spending 30 days in the nursing home for rehab. I was there every day, advocating for her. We began to see the isolation and the loneliness and the depression in the nursing homes.”
September 10th, Rogers will be heading to 38 nursing facilities on the Coast. She is in need of more volunteers. If you would like to sign up, please visit their website at adoptagrandparent.org.
