Gulfport Settles for 4.4 Million from BP
The City of Gulfport has reached an agreement with BP for economic losses caused by the 2010 oil spill.
Tonight during a special meeting, the city signed a $4.4 million settlement. This makes Gulfport the third Gulf Coast city to settle with BP. Last week, Biloxi settled for $4.9 million, while D’iberville settled for just under 1 million.
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes tells News 25, he’s happy to put this chapter behind them and move forward, using the money for all the city needs, especially in economic development. “4.4 million is a lot of money and the city, in the larger scale, it’ll go quick. The harbor services facility, I think we’re probably going to have to apply some money to that so there are a lot of opportunities that we have in needs, whether it’s roads, sewer, water, these structures. We’ll be able to obligate it pretty quickly,” said Mayor Hewes.
Gulfport’s local government payment is part of the total $18.7 billion settlement of civil claims filed against BP that were announced two weeks ago.
