$700 Million Powerball Jackpot

The largest jackpot in U.S. history and $700 million could be in the hands of one lucky winner this Saturday.
Many South Mississippi residents are hoping it’s them who end up with the jackpot and that’s why they flocked across the state border and into Louisiana today.
In the U.S., there are 400 RaceTrac gas stations. The one sitting just off of Interstate 10 sells more lottery tickets than any of the other 399. As the Powerball just hit $700 million, many of those tickets were purchased by residents from the Coast. Gulfport resident Sultana Good said, “I missed out on the last draw so me and my friend, Lisa Jones, I said ‘let’s go to Slidell and buy some tickets’ and here we are.”
You could call it the luck of the draw for Good because Wednesday’s $524 million pot went unclaimed. Just a day later, it’s the largest jackpot in U.S. history and this time, she’s not missing out on a second chance at luck, just like another Coast resident from Pass Christian. Pass Christian resident Fred said, “This good friend of mine influenced me and said ‘come over.’ He said it’s going to be zillions of dollars and I said, well like most everybody, we’re a little bit greedy at heart. So, we’re looking for money and we’re hoping to hit the big money.”
But hitting it big will take a little more than hope. Chances of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,000,000. For many Coast residents that is a chance they are willing to take. “I bought $20 worth but it only takes one but I’m trying my luck,” said Good.
And how your fellow Gulf Coasters would spend the $700 million jackpot just might surprise you. “Give some to our church. Some to our family and do some good with it,” said Fred. Biloxi resident Robin Belesky said, “Start a non-profit, probably dealing with homeless issues,”
For many locals, the chance at millions comes down to simple math: about an hour drive from the Coast: $30 in gas, one Powerball ticket: two bucks. Being $700 million richer: priceless.
If you purchased a lottery ticket be sure to check your numbers on Saturday when the winning numbers will be drawn.
