6A State Championship Preview: George County
After taking a back seat to Gulfport in 2017, the George County baseball program has solidified its place as a 6A powerhouse with yet another trip to the state championship series.
That makes three times in the last four years following a two-game sweep of those Admirals on Friday. The Rebels also took down Biloxi, Brandon, and Harrison Central during their playoff run, losing just one post-season game thanks in large part to a pair of future division I pitchers Mississippi State commit Logan Tanner and South Alabama commit Trevor McDonald.
Today, George County accepted its South State trophy at a press conference at Trustmark Park with a new look roster, but the same winning recipe. George County head baseball Coach Brandon Davis said, “Yeah man, to be back it’s something special. Every time you get the opportunity to come and you’re fortunate enough to get here, played a lot of really good teams to get here, so just to be back, some of the guys on this team have been here before, I only have two that played in the state championship last time we came, so you get a whole new group of guys and it just kind of keeps the tradition and the hunger for your guys to continue to come on every time you come to this venue to play this state championship.”
The Rebels draw DeSoto Central from the north with game 1 slated for Wednesday at 7 p.m. They’ll be gunning for the first state title since 1997.
