4A State Championship Preview: Vancleave

In Class 4A, Vancleave is the new kid on the block on the back of its first South State title in school history.

The Bulldogs swept rival East Central on Friday after splitting the regular season series with the Hornets. Prior to that, Vancleave eliminated Mendenhall, Poplarville, and West Lauderdale without losing a single game in the process.

While the stage gets even bigger at Trustmark Park, the minor league venue isn’t something that’s gonna intimidate the Bulldogs in their best-of-three series against New Hope.  Vancleave head baseball Coach Daniel Best said, “Well, luckily for us we played Gulfport early in the season at Shuckers stadium in Biloxi so we got the experience of playing in a big park and in front of a big crowd and I think that’s going to help. And then also we’ve had some big crowds in the playoffs. We had close to 1,400 people in attendance at our game against East Central this past week and 1,200 in attendance at their place, so we’ve played on some big stages. And if there’s anything to stress to my guys it’s just to stay loose just like we’ve done all year, and just continue to treat it like another ball game.”

Vancleave lost that game to Gulfport 3-2 in the midst of a five-game losing streak. The Bulldogs 25-2 ever since. Game one is set for 4 p.m. in Pearl on Wednesday.
