25-year-old charged with arson in Jackson County fires case

An arrest has been made in connection with the wildfires that spread through Harrison and Jackson counties on Monday.

Jackson County arrested Michael Dale Dearman Jr., 25, on a felony charge of arson.

Dearman was in County Court this afternoon for an initial appearance. Judge Mark Watts set his bond at $50,000

Sheriff Mike Ezell said deputies and U.S. Forestry Service law enforcement responded to the Larue Road and Scarborough Road area  of Jackson County about 9 p.m. Monday night in the Latimer Community where several fires appeared to have been deliberately set.

Officials acted on tips received and gathered evidence before arresting Dearman on Scarborough Road.

The fires affected private property and federal property that is part of Desoto National Forest.

The U.S. Forestry Service is investigating the fires, along with Jackson and Harrison county officials.
