23rd Annual Hoopsfest Scheduled Announced

When Gulfport Athletic Director Bryan Caldwell and former St. Stanislaus Head Coach Jay Ladner started what we now know as Hoopsfest, it was simply a high school basketball tripleheader. Now it’s a septuple-header featuring seven games in one day, all inclusive with a slam dunk contest and 3 point shootout.
Today the schedule was announced for the January 28th affair set to take place at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The lineup is stacked from top to bottom with D’Iberville and West Harrison kicking things off at 10 a.m. Headlining the nightcap is a showdown between two of the top teams on the Coast: Biloxi and Bay High. Of course, the rim-rocking, sharp-shooting entertainment is to follow, making for another star-studded event. “The key is to get the best teams you can get. In the Sun Herald Top 10, we’ve got the top 10 teams playing. We’ve brought in teams from outside the area, this year it’s Madison Ridgeland Academy. We’ve had guys who have gone on to the NBA. It’s a really good showcase,” said Caldwell.
Gulfport Head Boys Basketball Coach Owen Miller said, “We’re all trying to get to Jackson and to play in a venue that sets up that way is so different from the venues we play night in and night out, it’s a good experience. It’s a dress rehearsal for what’s to come.”
Caldwell steps back in as Hoopsfest director for retired Pass Christian Head Boys Basketball Coach Buddy Kennedy who decided to call it quits after last season.
