An early morning shooting near the corner of Polk St. and Carolina Avenue in Gulfport on Sunday left one 18-year-old dead and three others injured.
A graduation party turned into a crime scene early Sunday morning after multiple shots were fired on the corner of Polk Street and Carolina Avenue. Resident Augustine Sanders said, “One baby was running so fast he ran out of his shoes in our yard.”
The Sanders family lives on Carolina Avenue and had two bullets ricochet throughout their house. “It was crazy. We were scared for our lives. We were sleeping when it happened. We just woke up to gunshots all over our house. We stayed down until the gunfire stopped. When it stopped, we got up and saw all of the bullet holes.”
The Sanders family was not the only family to wake up to the sounds of gunshots and having to take cover. Resident Connie Daniels said, “We heard a lot of shots and my wife screamed and hit the floor. I said ‘I ain’t hittin’ no floor.’ Because I’m kind of handicapped. So, she took me in the hallway.”
Daniels grew up in the area and his family had moved back two years ago. “It’s been real quiet since we’ve been back. Ain’t nothing like this happened since I was younger. There used to be some shooting out here, but it had calmed down a lot.”
The investigation is active and so far only two arrests have been made for tampering with evidence. Gulfport Police PIO Jason Ducre said, “It’s still new, it’s still on going, we’re asking people to come forward with any new information.”
