GULFPORT, Miss.(WXXV)-The Coronavirus pandemic, the quarantining and social distancing that’s mandated can make anyone feel lonely. The humane society of South Mississippi is sending the message that it don’t have to be that way.
In response to Covid-19, Bissell Pet Foundation will sponsor reduced adoption fees across the country beginning today in efforts to assist animal shelters that are struggling with fewer volunteers and staff to care for their animals.
Thanks to the funding, you can adopt a pet for just 25 dollars or only 7 dollars for large dogs 35 pounds and up or 15 buck for cats. Development director Katie King says it’s a good time to gain a new friend.
“Please visit our website at HSSM.org first to go ahead and pick out a couple of pets that you’re interested in and jot down their animal ID number and name and then when you come to the shelter. You’re actually going to stay in your vehicle and an adoption counselor is going to come out wearing the appropriate self protection equipment and assist you with the dog or cat out doors,”said King.
Hours of operation during this special March 26-April 1st are 10am to 2pm. The shelter will be closed Sunday march 29th after the special, the adoption department will be open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 2pm until further notice.
