The 2020 MLK Celebration is officially underway.
Things kicked off tonight with a mental health awareness soiree called “Power in Pumps.” A panel made up of mental health experts offered insights on mental and socioeconomic issues women of color face on a regular basis and ways to discover solutions.
This event brought Coastal women out in their best pumps. Event organizer Jocelyn Gavin’lane says this is a great way to kick off a celebration for Dr. King. “So often mental health is stigmatized in our community. So this is a great small space for us to have those conversations and bring women to the table who are also experts in mental health so they can answer some of these ladies’ burning questions. We like to give women their own separate event because we have been leaders in our community and leaders in our family so we want to do something special for women in our community.”
The celebration continues tomorrow night at 7 with the MLK Gospel Concert. It’s free and open to the public.
