Shocking new statistics paint a grim picture for firefighters in our state, but there is something you can do to help.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there have been 46 firefighter fatalities reported so far in 2019. In 2018, 82 firefighters died while on duty.
Ocean Springs Fire Chief Derek McCoy urges everyone in the state to have working smoke detectors in their homes to prevent more fatalities. “Mississippi always ranks the highest or among the highest in the nation for firefighter fatalities. Actually, the state is undergoing a campaign right now where the state is giving out free smoke detectors to those who request them.”
Contact your local fire department to see if they are participating in the free smoke alarm program.
