The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has awarded two grants to Harrison and Jackson counties to help with waste management efforts.
Jackson County was awarded a solid waste assistance grant for more than $111,000. This grant will be used by the county for a solid waste enforcement officer, a household hazardous waste collection program, and for illegal dumpsite cleanup.
Over in Harrison County, their grant is a little more specific. Their utility authority will be receiving $51,500 for a two year waste tire grant. This will help the county with the local tire collection program for small quantity generators of waste tires.
Funding for waste tire grants is provided by a waste tire account funded from a fee charged on the wholesale of every new motor vehicle tire sold in Mississippi.
