Today is the first day back to school for the Harrison County School District and some kindergarten students got a welcoming surprise.
Keesler Federal Credit Union donated backpacks for these students in Ms. Steven’s class at River Oaks Elementary. The backpacks were filled with supplies like notebooks, crayons, markers, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, and more.
Harrison County School District wasn’t the only ones to receive these backpacks either. Keesler Federal Credit Union donated 6,000 of them to 16 different school districts throughout South Mississippi.
As for Ms. Stevens and other teachers on the Coast, they are more than grateful. “This is my 18th, beginning of my 18th year, and I have never received such a generous donation. Everything that they could possibly need was donated. It is just a God send and then you can focus on educating students and not scrambling to get the materials.”
This was the first year for the initiative by Keesler Federal Credit Union and they say they hope to do it in years to come and to expand it to include more students and more school districts.
