When Justin Steel was a senior at George County High School, MGM Park hadn’t even been built yet.
But now, the fifth round pick of the Chicago Cubs in 2014 is getting the chance to return to his old stomping grounds to pitch in front of family and friends.
Tonight, the Biloxi Shuckers reserved a special section 108 for those rooting on the former Rebel who got the start for the Tennessee Smokies in game three.
Among them was his former pitching coach, Tim Davis, cousin of head coach Brandon Davis, who says it’s a privilege to watch it all come full circle for one of George County’s finest. “I told somebody earlier, it’s just mind-blowing that a kid from George County has done what he’s done and he has thoroughly changed everything about George County. I mean all the kids, there’s two kids sitting right here beside me and they look up to him, idolize him and just think he’s the best thing that’s ever happened to George County baseball.”
Steele is the eighth ranked prospect in the Cubs farm system according to MLBPipeline.com.
