After nearly four decades in education, one local principal is retiring.
Ocean Springs Upper Elementary School Principal Susan Dollar is saying goodbye to work and hello to retirement. “I’m going to miss so many great teachers that I have here. They are very special and dear to me. I have made so many wonderful teacher and administrator friends throughout the years and the students, I actually have a teacher here that I taught in the third grade.”
Mrs. Dollar has called Ocean Springs home her whole life. Now, she is ending her career at the same exact place she started it. “Thirty-eight years ago, I was in this building for my very first job as an assistant teacher.”
Principal Dollar has left her mark on countless people during her career including many of the teachers she worked with. Teacher Mallory Strayham said, “I would credit one hundred percent of my success to her. She has been the backbone of this school. She has pushed her teachers, her students to be better and here we are.”
It wasn’t just the staff at the school Principal Dollar made an impact on, it’s clear the students love her as well. Fifth grader Vivian Monforten said, “I’m sad because she has been a great principal here and for all of the years that I have been here and I will miss her very much.”
As for the future, Principal Dollar plans on enjoying some free time with her family. “What’s next is do whatever we want to do. My husband and I, we have been married for 43 years so it is kind of time that we take some trips that we haven’t taken because work has always been big in my life. I have spent a lot of hours at it.”
