As Mississippi State continues its ascension into the elite ranks of nationally-renowned women’s basketball programs, Selection Monday has become something to celebrate in Starkville.
Today, the Bulldogs were tabbed as a number 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. That means MSU will be hosting the first two rounds at the Hump starting with Friday’s date against 16 seed Southern University.
The winner of that game will turn around and play the winner of 8 seed South Dakota and 9 seed Clemson for the right to advance to the Sweet 16.
Of course, the Bulldogs have made it at least that far three years in a row, including back-to-back trips to the National Championship game the past two years.
Coming off an impressive run to the program’s first ever SEC Tournament championship, Head Coach Vic Schaefer says he’s going to keep relying on Harrison Central alum Jazzmun Holmes for senior leadership during the big dance. “It’s just really phenomenal to go 30-2 and to win the SEC regular season outright and then come back and win the tournament championship three straight days, my hat’s off to this team. They have been tremendous. Jazz has had an unbelievable season, she is playing at an extremely high level. I think that’s why, I know that’s why our team is as successful as it is and I just need her to continue to be locked in because she is infectious to our team.”
Holmes said, “It’s exciting. I know my teammates look up to me and whenever I’m going they’re going, so I just have to keep a level head going into the tournament. Doing things that worked for us the entire year, so just keeping a level head. Doing the things that I need to do to stay healthy and stay prepared for the tournament.”
MSU and Southern will tip things off at 8:30 p.m. on Friday on ESPN2.
