2019 HoopsFest ready for tipoff
More than a month after the HoopsFest reveal, the 25th annual high school basketball showcase is finally upon us, less than 24 hours away from tipoff at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Things get rolling at 10 a.m. tomorrow with Long Beach and Pass Christian and run all the way through the 7:30 p.m. game between Biloxi and Florence.
Overall, 13 of the 14 teams are local. The other teams are St. Stanislaus, Hancock, Ocean Springs, West Harrison, D’Iberville, Picayune, St. Martin, Bay High, Gulfport and Stone.
It’s quite the family affair that’s all starting to come full circle on this milestone year. Mississippi Coast Coliseum Executive Director Matt McDonnell said, “It’s had a long history. Lots of talent has been on that court. Guys that have gone directly from high school to the NBA, guys that have gone from high school to Division I whether it was at LSU, Alabama or many other Southeastern Conference schools, including Kentucky. Now we’re getting players that played in the game and now have become coaches in the game, so those things make it fun and make it worthwhile in doing year after year.”
Half of the coaches in this year’s event played in HoopsFest when they were in high school.
