2018 Dragon Boat Festival

The United Way of South Mississippi hosted a fundraiser which was the hottest event on the water over the weekend.

The 2018 Gulf Coast Dragon Boat Festival supports early education programming and agencies the United Way helps fund in Harrison, Hancock, Stone, and Pearl River counties.

Twenty-two teams competed at the third annual event which consisted of heat races. There were also awards given for team spirit and the penny wars to see which agencies could raise the most money at the festival.

United Way CEO Kathy Springer tells News 25 all of the local agencies enjoyed their time on the water and raising money to support the other programs in South Mississippi. “Dragon boat races are a century old sport. We kind of put our own twist on it down here in South Mississippi. I’m telling you it’s harder than it looks.”

Competitor Bubba Holifield said, “I enjoyed it. It was my first time here and I will do it again next year. It’s a good event.”

Out of 22 teams, it was Team Mississippi Power Company who came out on top in the heat races.
