2018 annual Freedom Fund Gala

The Gulfport branch of the NAACP held their annual Freedom Fund Gala Sunday evening at the Beau Rivage while celebrating black excellence.

Gulfport’s NAACP invited families of all who have died in the line of freedom in light of this year’s theme ‘A change is gonna come.’

The NAACP hosted Stacey Abrams, a Georgia gubernatorial candidate and Gulf Coast native, as their keynote speaker for the evening.

Abrams spoke on the importance of voting, voting rights, and the opportunities she sees in upcoming elections. “I’m just proud to be a part of the NAACP and its work. I’m a lifetime member and I know the value of the work they’ve done. My father was arrested in Hattiesburg when he was a teenager for helping people register to vote. My mom was part of the Civil Rights Movement and they raised me to understand that we have an obligation to serve. I’m here to celebrate that commitment to service, that commitment to freedom. I hope they leave here energized and ready to go to work.”

Abrams is the first black woman to be named the Georgia gubernatorial Democratic nominee.
