2017 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic PGA Champions Tour
It’s time for some golf here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We’re only days away from the eighth annual Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, a stop on the PGA Champions Tour.
At Fallen Oak Golf Club in Biloxi, it’s almost time for another year of the PGA Champions Tour’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. This year’s event is drawing in bigger and better names than ever and a few of those pros are already in town, getting familiar with the course and preparing strategies for the tournament. Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic Tournament Director Steve Nieman said, “We have 79 players in the field. Some of the world’s greatest golfers on the PGA Champions Tour are here. We’ve got, John Daly is going to make a visit here for the first time. Like I said, Stricker is coming, Jose Maria Olazabal, a first time two time Master winner, World Golf Hall of Famer golfer. Our field is fantastic and these guys will put on a great show.”
They’ll have to, starting Friday and playing through the weekend, you can expect some fierce competition from golfers looking to take the crown from defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez and claim their portion of a $1.6 million purse, but it’s not just the golfers that are looking at big money. “This is the eighth year of the tournament. We eclipsed the $100 million economic impact number. On average, it’s about $15 million a year, showcasing this event to the world through the Golf Channel with live coverage on the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, two hours each day. When you bring all of these guys in and their families in and the caddies in and the Golf Channel brings all of their folks. You’re talking about a lot of room nights and a lot of people going out and having dinner,” said Nieman.
Admission to the event is $15 with no charge for anyone under 16 all weekend long. Bring a children’s book to get in for free on Saturday and all veterans and servicemen get in free on Sunday.
